My colleagues Ken and Lisa and I had the honor of attending this year’s Umbraco-kalaset at Berns in Stockholm. A festive event for and by the Umbraco community that provided great insights and left us wanting more!

Together with Sweco and Calejo, we at Esatto have conducted an innovation sprint within the framework of the Brons Digital Innovation Hub. The goal of the innovation sprint has been to bridge the gap between systems and users by creating a new user interface for the new AI platform, Smart Water.

We need to talk about the elephant in the room: the requirements specification. You know exactly how it usually goes. First, someone writes a requirements spec. Then someone else reviews the requirements specification. After that, a new document is written about the requirements specification. And finally, the file is labeled “a work in progress".

AI has rapidly evolved from being a technical trend to a strategic business reality. Yet while many organizations experiment with AI in different corners of their operations, far fewer succeed in translating its potential into measurable impact on the bottom line.

We have built an entire industry around producing documents. Pre-studies, functional specifications, and wireframes. All in the name of creating certainty. The logic is simple: “If we just write everything down in enough detail, nothing can go wrong". But in the age of AI, that sense of security is an expensive illusion.

Most discussions about AI start in the same place: the cost of investment. That is a reasonable questions but it only tells half the story. The question that is rarely asked is the opposite one: what does it cost to do nothing?
