Crane Phase 3
From Innovation to Preventive Healthcare Across Europe
Crane is an EU initiative aimed at providing citizens with tools to measure, store, and share their health data. By enabling personal health management, the project seeks to reduce pressure on healthcare systems throughout Europe while empowering citizens to take greater responsibility for their own health and wellbeing. With an aging population and increasing demand on healthcare services, the initiative addresses a challenge affecting millions of Europeans.

Esatto’s team participates in Phase 3 of the Crane project, which started in December 2024 and runs until March 2026. This phase focuses on finalizing the development of a mobile app for EU citizens (MyHealthEnabler), ensuring compliance with EU requirements, and conducting field tests in three regions: Västerbotten (Sweden), Arendal (Norway), and Extremadura (Spain). The project covers approximately 8,500 working hours and is carried out in collaboration with iGrant.io, responsible for the marketplace and technology for safe storing and sharing of data.
“Our goal has been to build a secure and trustworthy platform that is also easy to use in everyday life,” says Fredric Belin, Project Manager at Esatto.
Creating Value Through Technology
At the core of Phase 3 is the MyHealthEnabler app, designed to integrate a wide variety of measuring devices, from blood pressure monitors to smartwatches and fitness trackers. All data is saved in a secure Data Wallet, allowing citizens to control their personal health information and share it safely with their next of kin and with healthcare providers across Europe. The Data Wallet follows EU standardization (EUDI Wallet) This standard will also support broader functionalities such as storing digital identity documents, payments, and much more. The EUDI Wallet will begin rolling out in December 2026.
The app enables users to monitor key health indicators related to chronic conditions such as COPD, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. When, for example, blood pressure readings are elevated, the app can guide users toward preventive measures such as improved diet, sleep, or physical activity. This preventive approach promotes a healthier lifestyle for the citizens and contributes to easen the burden on healthcare systems.
“By linking continous health measurements to actionable insights, we empower citizens to improve and take more responsibility for their own health while reducing unnecessary strain on healthcare,” Fredric explains.
Field Testing and User Engagement
Phase 3 places strong emphasis on field testing, in which the app is tested by real users before full-scale deployment. Around 75 volunteers participated across the regions in Norway, Sweden, and Spain. Participants included engaged citizens, healthcare professionals, and representatives from organizations promoting digital inclusion among older adults.
The field tests evaluated both the app’s functionality and the integration of health data, generating valuable feedback that helped refine the product. Despite regional challenges such as lack of connectivity and language barriers, the tests generated valuable insights that helped refine both functionality and user experience across all regions.
“The feedback from participants has been invaluable. Seeing how users interact with the app in their daily lives has given us insights that we simply can’t obtain in any other way. Thanks to this knowledge, we have been able to make numerous improvements,” notes Fredric.

Building a Scalable and Compliant Solution
Crane Phase 3 follows strict EU guidelines and is overseen by 15 representatives from Sweden, Norway, Spain, and Denmark. Esatto is part of one of only two actors selected for this phase, reflecting the team’s documented expertise and reliability. The project methodology ensures that all new technology adheres to EU laws and directives, with a clear focus on creating secure, scalable, and citizen-centric solutions.
The project’s design also allows for flexibility in future initiatives, including potential EU-funded or external projects. For example, data from voluntary health screenings can be securely shared with healthcare providers, enabling better preventive care while allowing citizens to retain ownership of their personal health information.
Societal Impact
Crane exemplifies how digital solutions can create significant societal benefits. By equipping citizens with tools to monitor and manage their own health, the project reduces pressure on healthcare systems, particularly in regions with aging populations or limited medical resources. The initiative has the potential to positively impact 400 million citizens across Europe.
“This project demonstrates how technology can truly serve society, supporting individual wellbeing while relieving pressure on public healthcare,” Fredric emphasizes.
The combination of innovative technology, rigorous field testing, and user-centered design ensures that the MyHealthEnabler app not only meets functional requirements but also delivers real value. Positive feedback from the field tests reflects both the quality and societal relevance of the work.
Looking ahead
Phase 3 is one of the largest projects Esatto has ever undertaken. With the Data Wallet rollout planned for December 2026, the infrastructure established through Crane could serve as the foundation for future health initiatives within the whole of EU. The project highlights how secure, user-controlled health data can improve preventive care, enable cross-border treatment, and promote a healthier society.
“We are proud to contribute to a project that combines cutting-edge technology with societal value, and we look forward to seeing these tools benefit many European citizens,” Fredric concludes.
